SCHOOL NEWS

WILSON FOUNDATION HOUSE PARTY EXTRAVAGANZA, NOVEMBER 2
Wilson parents, supporters, neighbors, and staff, attended the 3rd Annual Wilson House Party Extravaganza on November 2nd, an evening of fun fundraising for the Wilson High School Foundation. Parties were held in multiple homes around the Wilson neighborhood on the same evening. Funds raised are used to supplement teaching staff. To donate to the Wilson High School Foundation, email: wilsonhighschoolfoundation@gmail.com. Thanks for your support!

"We had such a great time hosting a house party for Wilson alums last year. We shared stories from our high school days, and even did some line dancing (but that's another story)... The best part was sending a check to the Wilson Foundation to help support our community school and kids." Lucy Brehm '77

FROM PRINCIPAL BRIAN CHATARD
“Amazing things are happening at Wilson! Momentum is a powerful force and is starting to build in this community. I have talked about my hopes for Wilson at every opportunity and plans are in motion to make them happen. Academically we're reaching goals that hardly seemed possible, but last year 98% of our freshmen class met the PPS Milestone and passed at least 6 classes, thanks to their hard work and the supports we have put into place to assure that students who need the extra help are identified and supported before they fall through the cracks.
"

Through December 31st:
Donate today to help bring us $5,000 closer to our goal for the year. Here’s how: A generous WHS family has pledged to match contributions made to the Wilson Foundation up to $2000 by the end of the year. Their employer will match $1,000 of that amount. With additional donations totaling $2,000, that means a $5,000 gain for the Foundation! Please send a check or donate online today. Checks may be made out to WHS Foundation and mailed to 1151 SW Vermont St., Portland 97219.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

SCIENCE AND MATH, THE KEY TO YOUR FUTURE
A.J. Rikli graduated from Wilson in 2004. From there he attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where he received a B.S. in Environmental Engineering in 2009. A.J. is now a Staff Engineer at Rockridge Geotechnical, a geotechnical engineering firm based in Oakland, California. Before joining Rockridge Geotechnical, AJ spent two years in the United States Peace Corps serving in Rwanda where he taught chemistry, raised donor funds, and remodelled schools. He has provided geotechnical construction observation and testing services, as well as performed subsurface investigations. His favorite classes at Wilson were in science and math. Mr. Penk was his favorite science teacher, and Mr. Milne was his favorite math teacher. "My first piece of advice to current Wilson students," adds A.J., "is to study hard and do your homework! My grades in high school opened up a world of opportunity for my college education, and I'll never appreciate that enough." His second piece of advice is to look at the sciences and math in high school. A.J. recommends, "try hard to excel at sciences and math, because there will always be a shortage of good engineers in this country." Wilson students, if you have questions about engineering, feel free to contact A.J. at this link.
