CURRENT SCHOOL NEWS

NEW FILM MADE BY CURRENT WILSON STUDENTS
This powerful film was made by Wilson's very own NO PLACE for HATE Peer Facilitators: Hui Hui Hutchinson Cata Montiero, Lee Holoubek, Maddie Limon, Celia Connor-Smith, Yaniv Horenstein, Ruby Park, and Gia Prado. These students along with 20 other Peer Facilitators were trained by the Anti-Defamation League to facilitate learning for their peers at school about how to be an ally rather than a bystander when observing or experiencing hate and/or bullying. Vice Principal Ayesha Coning and our Campus Security Agent, who is also a film-maker, Garrett Norman, worked closely with our students over the summer to create this film. It was shown to our student body on Wednesday during 4th period. A HUGE thanks to these courageous students, AND to our CAFE (Community and Family Equity) Council and Principal Filip Hristic who supported this project from the very beginning. 2020 MEL KRAUSE MEMORIAL PIL GOLF TOURNAMENT CANCELED
https://mailchi.mp/ec472725e08b/2020-pil-hof-mel-krause-memorial-golf-tournament
Sadly, the PIL was forced to cancel this year’s tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As most of you know, this event is the PIL Hall of Fame’s largest fundraiser with all proceeds going directly to support PIL athletics and the PIL recognition ceremonies supported by the PIL HOF. Despite having to cancel, we are hoping you can still find it in your hearts to provide desperately needed financial support so we can continue to fulfill our mission of supporting the PIL community. In the past we have accomplished our mission with your generosity at our golf tournament. We hope that this year will be no different. If you enjoyed playing golf, bidding on donated items at the auction and having a great time with your friends, we are hoping to continue that tradition this year, albeit in a different format.

First, we are asking for you to please make a donation in the same manner as you have in the past with a virtual $135 green fee and/or a $150 hole sponsorship.
To get things started and to hopefully encourage you, the Harold and Margaret Taylor Foundation led by Bill Taylor is offering to match the first $5000 dollars raised with a dollar for dollar match! PLEASE help us meet this match. Make a contribution using a credit card, please go to the PIL website www.pilhalloffame.org and click on the Virtual Golf link to donate. Or, simply fill out donation form below and write a check and mail it to: PIL Hall of Fame, 9355 SW Camille Terrace, Portland OR  97223-7042. We hope you will be able to contribute whatever makes you feel comfortable to help us get past this year and include yourself in one of our donation categories per the following sponsorship levels.

Secondly, we are exploring the possibility of a virtual golf event and/or Zoom meeting in September to see all your smiling faces and enjoy our annual interaction, details will be forthcoming. We want to express our sincere and heartfelt gratitude to all the merchants, business donors, sponsors, players and volunteers for your support in the past years and hope we can count on your support again this year. Our success cannot happen without you and we look forward to seeing all of you again in 2021 to continue this fabulous tradition. Please address any questions to Steve Rudolph at rudy6@hotmail.com, 503-449-0438. Also, if possible, please send us your email address so we can update our records. Please send to pilhalloffame@gmail.com

Thanks again for your continued support!
Sincerely,
PIL HOF Golf and Auction Committee

JUST A LITTLE MORE WILSON SPORTS HISTORY

by Doug Atterbury, '64

I read with interest the article by Gerry Williams '76 about the prowess of Wilson sports teams.  He mentioned how Wilson "owned the PIL in the 70s".  I lettered in swimming two years in the early 60s, and Wilson was just as dominant during the decade of the 60s.  We never lost a dual PIL swim meet, and won the City championships for years.  Our boys team took second in the state meet in December 1963.  The Wilson girls teams did even better, winning the state meet every year from 1961 to 1965.

ALUMNI ... DONATE TO THE MERLE AND PAT LOTZ MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP
Wilson High School has just advertised a Scholarship for WHS music students in the name of music teacher, Merle Lotz. The Lotz children asked for donations to this fund in lieu flowers. Wilson collected $8000 in the Lotz name and we will be offering scholarships over the next couple of years. To view the scholarship application: https://forms.gle/zrs5Jt9G8C1pnhqC8. Merle and Pat Lotz were active music teachers and in Portland from 1951-1995. Merle spent 32 years in public school choral teaching (at Jefferson, Wilson, and Benson High Schools); as well as serving as church music director, performing as pianist with the Oregon Symphony Pops orchestra, and running his own dance band for 45 years. Pat was a public school music teacher, accompanist for the Portland Chorale, and a private piano teacher for 45 years. She and Merle took the Wilson high school choir on a trip to Europe in 1971, creating the memories of a lifetime for 70 young singers. This music scholarship is a powerful way to honor and celebrate their many years of dedication to music education, as well as their love of students and people, and their understanding of the positive impact of music in the hearts and lives of all people. WILSON SCHOLARSHIP INITIATIVE ... Did you know…

• One in four college students graduate with student debt.
• Tuition and fees to attend a public four-year university have jumped 275% since 2000.
• Over 1.48 trillion in loan debt is collectively owed which is about 790 billion more than the total U.S. credit card debt.
• Oregon has fallen to the bottom tier nationally of states providing financial support for its neediest students.

All of this might be bad news for new high school graduates except that Wilson High School is unique. Wilson has a community that supports our commitment to helping our most deserving seniors succeed after high school. They first appealed to alumni in 2015 to join the Scholarship Initiative and your response was overwhelming. Your generosity has enabled them to provide two $1000 scholarships annually.

Wilson is asking once again for your support as they begin a drive to raise $50,000 to endow perpetual scholarships for Wilson students through the Oregon Community Fund program.

Benefits include:
• Donations are tax-deductible.
• For local businesses, you will receive a Wilson Student Supporter sticker, and the opportunity to advertise on Wilson's website.
• For donations of $1000 or more you can name your scholarship and attend the June awards ceremony to present your gift in person.
• Changing the lives of deserving Wilson students!

How to Donate:
• Checks can be mailed to: Wilson Scholarship Initiative, 1151 SW Vermont, Portland, OR  97219, ATTN: Erica Meyers. Please include your graduation year.
• Credit card contributions can be phoned to: Ana Curtis, Wilson bookkeeper, 503-916- 5280, ext. 75266.
• Donations can be made online through the Schoolpay link below: https://www.schoolpay.com/pay/for/Scholarship/Id7CX Please support Wilson's future leaders! No amount is too small. They thank you. Questions? Contact Tina-Marie Baskin, scholarship coordinator (tmbaskinwriting@gmail.com).
